888 - THE NUMBER OF JESUS

Many people are aware that the number of the beast or the anti-Christ is 666. This number is found in the Holy Bible, Revelation 13:18. But what is the number of Jesus? The Bible does not explicitly or implicitly give His number. Some say it is 1 or 7 or 777 or 8888 or what have you.

Would you believe that the number of Jesus is 888 and that this can scientifically be proven? Would you believe that the hands of God worked to show to the world this fact? Would you believe that it has taken thousands of years before this fact is proven to mankind? And would you believe that this is made manifest in Sydney, Australia?

Since this web page is 13 pages long, I just would like to give a summary of how God confirmed that the number of Jesus is 888 and that the crucifixion happened some 2000 years ago. If you wish to know the details of how I found these out, I encourage you to read the whole web page.

•          SUMMARY

The number of Jesus is 888. Using the Greek Ionic Ciphered Numeral System scientifically proves this. In this system, each letter of the Greek alphabet is assigned a numerical value. The name of Jesus in Greek is spelled I H S O U S (iota, eta, sigma, omicron, upsilon, sigma). Substituting in the Greek numeral system the equivalent numerical values to each letter in the name of Jesus and adding them up, the total is 888. The values of each letter are: iota, 10; eta, 8; sigma, 200; omicron, 70; upsilon, 400; sigma, 200. The sum of 10 + 8 + 200 + 70 + 400 + 200 is 888.

This fact is made manifest at the Campbelltown City Post Office in Metropolitan Sydney, New South Wales, Australia located 50 km to the southwest. At the post office are boxes. In a set of boxes of nine columns and eight rows, box number 888 is found on the fifth column and on the fourth row from above. It is right in the middle of a cross. There are four boxes on the right of box 888, four on the left, four below, and three above forming a symmetrical cross. 888, number of Jesus, cross! Coincidence?

Aside from this configuration, box 888 is found in the middle set of boxes. There is a set of boxes to the right and another set to the left. This will remind us of the crucifixion that happened at Calvary where Jesus was in the middle flanked by two thieves on His either sides. To the right of the middle set is a set of boxes where a cross can also be drawn. This may represent the thief who asked Jesus to remember him when Jesus comes as King. To the left of the middle set is a set of boxes where a cross cannot be drawn. This may represent the thief who hurled insults at Jesus and questioned His being the Messiah who could not even save Himself nor the thieves. Three sets of boxes with 888 in the middle set. A confirmation of the crucifixion? Coincidence?

Box 888 was available when we were to rent a box in 1993. My wife chose box 888 because she said the number signifies our arrival in Australia, i.e. August 1988. August is the 8th month and the year was 1988, hence, 888. Coincidence?

Are all these mere coincidences? If you will read the details below, you would find more. Why are they concentrated on me? They are beyond my control. They are facts. I did not fabricate them. You can prove to yourself the authenticity of what I say if you come and visit Sydney, Australia to see this remarkable, amazing and unique work of God revealing the number of Jesus and confirming the crucifixion of Jesus.

My wife, Florentina, and I applied for immigration to Australia under the sponsorship of my sister, Imelda, in 1985. I was the principal applicant. Our application was approved in 1986 on condition that I should have a confirmed employer in Australia. We informed my sister of the condition for migration. Since then, she tried to find an employer for me. Months passed by but she was unsuccessful in finding one.

About July 1986, after working in Saudi Arabia for five years and before returning home to the Philippines, I toured Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for a month. While in Singapore (which is nearer to Australia than Manila), I applied for a tourist visa to Australia at the Australian High Commission to personally search for an employer to satisfy the condition of our pending migration. Unfortunately, my application was denied. I appealed the decision citing my immigration circumstances but like the earlier application, I was denied entry. A few days later, I went home to the Philippines.

On February 21, 1987, I went back to work in Saudi Arabia. My sister continued to search for a company that would be willing to employ me in Australia. Because it had been a long time since we were approved to immigrate and the condition was not met yet, in mid-1987, my wife went to the Australian Embassy in Manila for a review of our case. Since an immigration officer in Saudi Arabia where the application was lodged imposed the condition, the embassy staff in Manila said he could not do anything about it. However, he assessed my wife's qualification. He found out that if my wife could be the principal applicant instead, and with her qualifications alone, we could easily surpass the passing mark and could immigrate to Australia as independent migrants. And that is what happened. I underwent in Saudi Arabia a physical and medical examination during the third quarter of 1987and was interviewed at the embassy in Manila in April 1988 when I went home to the Philippines for my annual leave.

We received the approval to come to Australia as independent migrants on July 7, 1988 and had to be in Australia by September 30, 1988. I was in Saudi Arabia when the notice of approval came. It was not until July 31, 1988 when I left Saudi Arabia because I wanted to turn over my work properly, to have more time to pack up my things for my final departure from the Kingdom, and to avail of a four-day Muslim holiday towards the end of that month. Meantime, back in the Philippines, my family was preparing for the departure for Australia.

When I arrived in Manila, my wife and I decided that we would depart for Australia as soon as possible and not wait till the September 30, 1988 deadline come. We reasoned that since we were going there anyway, why wait for September when we could go there that August. In that way, we could start our future in the new land soonest.

On August 18, 1988, my wife and I and our two children left the Philippines for Australia with a two-day-and-two-night stopover in Singapore. The Singapore holiday was a treat for us. It was the first time for the children to go abroad. I was the guide since I had been there for more than a week two years earlier. While in Singapore, we tried to contact my sister who was unaware of our coming. With the help of Alan Avanzado, a former colleague of my wife at work in the Philippines and who had immigrated to Australia earlier, we were able to get in touch with my sister. So when we arrived in Australia on Sunday, August 21, 1988, Alan, my sister and her partner Steve Majtenyi were there at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport to meet us. (These are from my passport showing the immigration visa to Australia and the stamp of my arrival in Sydney.)

It was August when we arrived in Australia. August is the eighth (8th) month of the year. And the year was 1988. Thus, 888 is the 8th month of 1988. This was how my wife figured it out five years later when we were to rent a post office box. Is it a coincidence that we had to arrive in Australia in August 1988? Why not in 1986? Why was a condition of entry as immigrant imposed? Why did we have to wait till 1988? Was it because God had a plan that we had to arrive in 1988? Why the September 30, 1988 deadline to enter Australia? These are some of the puzzling whys.

Since arriving in Australia, we had been living in the satellite city of Fairfield, some 25 km west of Sydney. My wife was working in the next suburb, just two minutes away by train. On the other hand, I was working at BHP Steel at Wollongong, some 100 km southeast of Fairfield. It took me 1-1/2 hours by car to go to work. That is 1-1/2 hours each way or three hours travel time each day! About December 1992, an untoward incident on our son, Florante, triggered our decision to move out of Fairfield. My wife felt that Fairfield was becoming hot and it was not safe to live there anymore. We searched for a property in the Campbelltown area and found the one that we have been occupying since February 28, 1993. Campbelltown was a logical choice because it is halfway between my and my wife's places of work. It is a satellite city of Metropolitan Sydney, New South Wales, located 50 km to the southwest, and about an hour away by train.

The Campbelltown City Post Office Building at the corner of Dumaresq Street and Coogan Place was inaugurated on June 7, 1976, 12 years before we even set foot on Australian soil and 17 years before we moved to Campbelltown. It is just five- to ten-minute walk from the train station.

We inquired about renting a post office box at the Campbelltown Post Office in late February 1993 when we were certain that we would be moving to Campbelltown. We were given a list of about 30 available numbers. From the list, I looked for a number that was going up like 1-2-3, 2-4-6, 3-6-9, 5-6-7, 3-5-7, or any number which is increasing (because I am an optimist) and regular in the series (because I like order and uniformity). However, I did not find any. On the list is number 888. Although I saw this number, I was not keen about it because I find the number 8 like wringing or twisting, which to me signifies hardship. My wife suggested 888 because, according to her, it signifies our arrival in Australia, which I did not realize then. I was hesitant but since I did not find a number that I prefer, I agreed to her choice because of its connection with our arrival in Australia. I also thought that it was a number that is easy to remember.

So, on March 3, 1993, we went to the Post Office and applied to rent box 888. Two days later, we received our first letter in our new residence. It was from the Post Office informing us that we were successful in our application to rent box 888. On March 8, 1993, we went to the Post Office to finalize the leasing agreement and paid the fees.

Why was post office box 888 available at the time when we were to rent a box? Coincidence? We have been renting this box since March 8, 1993. If anyone desires to rent it because of its significance or for whatever reason, it is unavailable because we are still renting it.

On January 28, 1994 and after working with the company since July 1989, I took the redundancy offer of BHP Steel under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme. From of the proceed of the redundancy payout, my wife and I bought one of the cars from her company, a 1991 Holden model Apollo. We registered it on April 8, 1994 ordering special number plate FAF-888. FAF stands for Florentina Alvarez Fernando -- Alvarez being my wife's maiden family name. The number 888 signifies our arrival in Australia--August 1988. Still, we did not know then that the number of Jesus is 888.

a. Anthony Castelo

I was tuned in to SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) Radio listening to the Pilipino Language Program during the second week of May. I was not a regular listener of the program but it just happened, maybe a coincidence, that during that afternoon program I was tuned in, Anthony Castelo was interviewed. Anthony is a popular singing personality in the Philippines and was on a concert tour of Sydney and Canberra, hence the interview.

I was glad to learn that Anthony was in Sydney. I thought that it might be my opportunity to meet my long lost peer again after more than 35 years. Anthony is the first cousin of my first cousin. I am just three years older than him. I remember that when we were kids, we used to see and play with each other during family gatherings.

After the program, I phoned the announcer and my friend, Ms Richie Valencia-Buenaventura, to inquire where Anthony could be contacted. Through her kind assistance, I was able to contact him. Within two days, Anthony and I met in person at the place where he was staying, about 25 km from where I live. It is just incredible that it will be in Sydney, Australia where our paths will cross, thousands of miles from where we came from (i.e. the Philippines). Coincidence or God’s plan?

During our conversation, Anthony was enthusiastic to show me the book that he had been reading. The title of the book was A Scientific Approach to Biblical History by R. W. Faid. Anthony is a born-again Christian and was interested in knowing scientific proofs about his Christian faith. Before we parted, Anthony lent the book to me to be returned the following day.

At home, I browsed through the book, and found out that the number of Jesus is 888. The book illustrated how this came about using the Greek Numeral System. I was surprised because the number is the number of our post office box. I was not able to photocopy the page but just remembered how 888 was derived. The next day, I went to see him because I was to drive him around. I returned the book and thanked him for lending it to me.

b. OUR 25th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

My wife and I planned a simple celebration of our 25th Wedding Anniversary and invited some close friends and relatives. Since May 17, 1994 fell on a Tuesday, we decided to hold the celebration on Sunday, May 15. I invited Anthony to come to the celebration, which he gladly accepted. His concert in Sydney was held Saturday, May 14, and he was already available that Sunday. Although he was an unexpected guest, it turned out that he would be the one to give life to the celebration because he entertained our guests with his music and jokes. He was the surprised gift from the Lord for our anniversary celebration, and my wife and I were very happy and thankful for the wonderful gift. On August 19, 2000, as I was writing this web page, I thought that discovering or learning that 888 is the number of Jesus is the one of the best gifts of the Lord to me for our wedding anniversary, if not the best.

Two months passed since my discovery of the significance of the number 888. On July 31, 1994, as I was to get the mail from our post office box, I noticed that box 888 seems to be somewhere in the middle. The set of boxes consists of nine columns and eight rows. When I counted the boxes on the left, right, above and below box 888, to my surprise, I discovered that box 888 is in the middle and a symmetrical cross could be formed. It is on the fifth column and the fourth row. There are four boxes on the right of 888, four on the left, four below and three above. If you draw a vertical line and a horizontal line through box 888, you will form a cross. Is this a coincidence? 888, number of Jesus, cross!

I had been sharing this discovery to friends and work colleagues, and sketching how the pattern looked like. Later, I decided to take photos of the boxes to show how it looked like. That was much better than making a sketch each time. It made my explaining much easier. Here is one of the photos that I took of box 888. And here is the schematic diagram of that set of boxes I did on MS Word in March 1999.

•        POST OFFICES BOXES AND CRUCIFIXION

Five more months later after discovering that box 888 is in the middle of a cross, in December 1994, I made another startling discovery. While showing the photos to explain where box 888 is, I noticed in a photo that there are three sets of boxes. Box 888 is in the middle set. I made a closer look of the other sets of boxes. I noticed that the first set of boxes is composed of all small boxes like the second or middle set. Hence, a cross can also be formed. However, the third set of boxes is composed three different sizes--small, medium and large. Because of its variety of sizes of boxes, a cross cannot be formed.

What came to my mind with this formation of the three sets of boxes was the crucifixion scene at Calvary wherein three people were nailed on three crosses with Jesus in the middle of two thieves. To the right of Jesus was a thief by the name of Dimas who asked Jesus to remember him when Jesus comes as King. Jesus replied to him, I will take you now with Me to Paradise. (Luke 23:41-42). The first set represents this thief, which is to the right of the middle set. A cross, which can also be formed in this set, is appropriate to one who trusted Jesus and will be rewarded to be with Jesus in Heaven. To the left of Jesus was another thief by the name of Hestas. He was the one who hurled insults at Jesus and questioned His being the Messiah who could not even save Himself nor the thieves (Luke 23:39). This third set represents this thief, which is to the left of the middle set. We can note that in this set, a cross could not be formed. No reward in Heaven awaits one who does not have trust and faith in Jesus.

Another thing that struck my mind in about 1999 was the placement of the three sets of boxes. They all face the street and are located between two niches or recesses. This is as if to emphasize that the formation is for the three sets of boxes only. Here is the photo of the post office boxes along Coogan Place.

Is this formation at the Campbelltown Post Office mere coincidence or God’s design? I firmly believe that this is God’s design. God is confirming that the number of Jesus is 888 and that the crucifixion really happened some 2000 years ago.

In school, we learned about the ancient Roman Numeral System which we still use for certain limited purposes, as in some pagination, dates on buildings, etc. Under this system, seven letters of the Roman alphabet are used as basic symbols to represent values, namely: I (=1), V (=5), X (=10), L (=50), C (=100), D (=500), and M (=1000). Thus, for example, XVI is 16 and DCCCLXXXVIII is 888.

Unlike the Roman Numeral System, the Greeks in their Ionic Greek Ciphered Numeral System used all the 24 capital letters of the Greek alphabet plus three foreign symbols, vau, koppa, and sampi (6, 90, and 900), to represent values as shown in the following table:

vau and koppa are of Phoenician origin. vau is shaped like the letter F, while koph, qoph, or koppa is shaped somewhat like Q. A character known in modern times as sampi is shaped somewhat like the Greek letter pi, P, but tipped about 45 degrees to the right, and represented in the table by S. The small letters of the Greek alphabet, by the way, is just a recent introduction.

Aside from the Greeks, the use of letters of the alphabet for the numeral system was also used in the Hebrew Numeral System and the Arabic Alphabetic Numeral System.

In January 1999, I realized that this Greek numeral system came into use in Greece since 3rd century BC. That is 300 years even before Jesus was born! When Jesus was born, it was the Romans who were the colonizers of Bethlehem. As such, the Roman numeral system was the one in used. The number 888 cannot even be derived from the name of Jesus since only the letter I in the name of Jesus is found in the numeral system.

In Greek, the name of Jesus is spelled I H S O U S (iota, eta, sigma, omicron, upsilon, sigma). Substituting in the Greek numeral system the equivalent numerical values to each letter in the name of Jesus and adding them up, the total is 888. This value is represented as W P H (omega, pi, eta) and does not look like 888.

It was only in the 12th century A.D. that the sum would look like 888 when the Arabic numerals using the characters 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 came into general use in Europe. The number eight that we use now does not even look like the number eight in the modern Arabic numeral. There, the number 8 looks like the Greek letter lambda or an inverted V.

During the time of Jesus, the Arabic Numeral System was not used yet. The number 8 did not even look like 8 now. The Romans were in control of Jerusalem and the Roman numeral system was used. The number 888 was represented in this numeral system as DCCCLXXXVIII.

It would need two different numeral systems and fifteen centuries apart before this amazing revelation of 888 would be discovered in the Arabic Numeral System. And it would be another eight centuries later before the number of Jesus and the crucifixion would be manifested and confirmed in humble post office boxes!

Is it a coincidence that the name of the Son of Man in Greek would be Jesus and be spelled I H S O U S? Is it a coincidence that the Greek would be using all the letters of their alphabet in the Ionic Greek Ciphered Numeral System, which gave values to each letter in the name of Jesus? Is it a coincidence that eventually, using a newer, modern numeral system, the number of Jesus would be revealed as 888?

After having shown that the number of Jesus is 888, does the number 8 signify anything? Why had the number of Jesus been 111 or 777 instead? I firmly believe that the number 8 has been chosen by God to emphasize to us about the infiniteness of God, and the veracity of the Trinity.

The number 8 is like the mathematical symbol for infinity (∞) in a vertical position. From Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, infinity means the quality of being infinite. And being infinite means being without limits of any kind, having no end, having no limit in power, capacity, knowledge, or excellence: immeasurable or inconceivably great; boundless, vast, immense, endless, inexhaustible, not finite: extending or lying beyond any preassigned value however large.

And this is what God is. He is infinite. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. He is The Infinite. Immeasurably grand, exceedingly great, boundless.

The number of Jesus is composed of three 8s. This is as if to emphasize that Jesus is infinite, that Jesus is God. The number 8 is repeated three times which means very truly. Very truly, He is infinite. Infinity. Infinity. Infinity.

On February 10, 2002, it came to my mind that 888 is infinity for each of the three persons in the Trinity. For truly, each of these persons in the Trinity--Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit--is God and is infinite. Because Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit are one and the same God manifesting in three different persons.

•          SIGN OF THE CROSS

Before I put the key in the keyhole of our post office box to get our mail, I make the sign of the cross in the following manner:
1. With my right fingers, I touch box 879 on top of the cross and say, In the name of the beloved Father.
2. I move my hand down to box 900 at the bottom of the cross and say, and of the beloved Son.
3. I move my hand to box 863 at the right of the cross and say, true man.
4. I move my hand across to box 913 at the left of cross passing over box 888 and say, and true God.
5. I move my hand back to the top of the cross on box 879 and say, and of the Holy Spirit.
6. I move my hand down to box 888, and say Amen.
7. Then I say a short prayer like Thank you, Jesus, for bringing me home to Campbelltown safely. or Thank you, Jesus, for looking after us.

I do this in recognition, acknowledgement, and appreciation that this configuration is the work of God.

Now that you know that 888 is the number of Jesus, maybe you would like that your vehicle plate number has 888 or that your house number be 888 or that you live in unit 8 of building number 88, or that your phone number has 888, etc. Just remember, what is important are you let Jesus live in your heart always and you follow His commandments, and you will be righteous.

 I hope these "coincidences" will prove to you that God is confirming to us that the number of Jesus is 888 and that crucifixion event really happened 2000 years ago. I guess God has made me to be His instrument for this affirmation. I cannot boast. I am just His humble servant.
